Meet the 22 Characters in the Detective Conan Series

Written by Gerryaldo

If you're a fan of the Detective Conan comics or movies, you're probably familiar with the main characters, right? From the "sleeping" Kogoro to the star of the show, Conan (or Shinichi). These characters are easy to recognize for longtime fans, but if you're new to Detective Conan, it can be a bit tricky.

Why? Well, there are some characters who look quite similar, and there’s a whole bunch of side characters too. But that's part of the fun for the series' creator, Aoyama Gosho, who loves crafting such a large cast.

The main plot of Detective Conan revolves around uncovering the truth behind various crimes committed by a shady group known as the Black Organization.

The story kicks off when Shinichi, the main character, gets caught snooping on an illegal deal by one of the group’s members. They give him a poison called APTX-4869, which doesn’t kill him as expected, but instead shrinks him down to the size of a little kid.

Even though he’s now a child and goes by the name Conan Edogawa, Shinichi's sharp mind stays intact. From there, the series follows Conan as he tries to unravel the secrets of the mysterious Black Organization, all while solving a wide range of cases—from simple ones to mind-boggling mysteries.

Along his journey, many characters are introduced. These supporting characters aren't just there for fun; they really help bring Conan’s world to life as he adjusts to being a 5th-grade student. So, who are the key players, and who helps Conan along the way? Let’s meet them all!

1. Shinichi Kudo (Jimmy Kudo in the English Version)

Shinichi Kudo is a high school junior who’s obsessed with solving mysteries, with Sherlock Holmes as one of his heroes.

Thanks to his smarts, he’s earned the title of Japan’s top young detective, cracking even the toughest cases with ease. But one fateful day changed everything.

While following two shady figures involved in an illegal deal, he was caught and given a deadly poison, APTX-4869.

Instead of dying, he was transformed into a child! To protect his identity, he took on the alias Conan Edogawa and continues to search for clues about the Black Organization.

2. Conan Edogawa

Conan Edogawa is actually Shinichi, but he was shrunk by a drug created by the Black Organization. His 18-year-old self is now trapped in the body of a 7-year-old.

Even though he looks like a child and has lost his physical strength, his intelligence is still as sharp as ever. On the night Shinichi disappeared and Conan appeared, he panicked and went to Prof. Agasa for help.

Prof. Agasa suggested Shinichi change his name to Conan Edogawa and move in with Kogoro Mouri, thinking that staying with the detective would lead him closer to solving cases related to the mysterious organization.

While living as a child, Conan becomes a student at Teitan Elementary School and forms close friendships with Ai, Ayumi, Genta, and Mitsuhiko.

3. Ran Mouri (Rachel Moore in the English Version)

Ran is Shinichi Kudo’s childhood friend, and the two share a close bond, often hinted at as more than just friendship. When Shinichi disappeared, telling her he was working on a big case and never came back, Ran was heartbroken.

However, Conan's presence helped ease some of her sadness. Ran has come close to figuring out that Conan is actually Shinichi but hasn't been able to fully prove it.

Ran is also a skilled karate athlete, having won national championships and serving as the captain of her school's karate club. Her strength and talent in karate make her respected by many.

She’s best friends with Sonoko Suzuki and is the daughter of Kogoro Mouri and Eri Kisaki. Despite her strength, Ran has a gentle personality and is easily moved to tears. She also gets really scared by anything supernatural.

4. Kogoro Mouri (Richard Moore in the English Version)

Kogoro Mouri is Ran’s father, and he works as a private detective. Before becoming a detective, he was a policeman, which is why many officers in the Japanese police force know him. His career as a detective improved thanks to the help of Shinichi (disguised as Conan).

Conan frequently solves cases by secretly putting Kogoro to sleep and then explaining the solution while using Kogoro as a mouthpiece. This led to Kogoro earning the nickname "Sleeping Kogoro," and many people think he’s a brilliant detective.

Kogoro is also skilled in judo, which he uses to handle criminals when needed. His idol is the famous singer Yoko Okino.

5. Sonoko Suzuki (Serena Sebastian in the English Version)

Sonoko Suzuki comes from one of the most influential families in Japan. Her father, Shiro Suzuki, runs the most powerful financial company in the country, and her mother, Tomoko, is a high-society elite. Her older sister, Ayako, is engaged, and Sonoko herself is dating Makoto Kyogoku, a karate champion.

Sonoko is a close friend of Ran Mouri, and they both attend Teitan High School as second-year students. Sonoko is known for her cheerful, fun, and down-to-earth personality.

Even though she's incredibly wealthy, Sonoko loves inviting Ran, Conan, Kogoro Mouri, and Prof. Agasa on luxury vacations, treating them to first-class experiences. Despite her wealth, she stays humble and kind to everyone.

6. Eri Kisaki (Eva Kadan in the English Version)

Eri Kisaki is Kogoro Mouri’s wife and Ran Mouri’s mother. She’s a top lawyer, often called the "Queen of Lawyers" because of her impressive track record in court. Sometimes, she even helps out Kogoro or Shinichi (as Conan) with their cases. Eri is also good friends with Shinichi’s mother, Yukiko Kudo.

She owns a Russian Blue cat, which she named Goro after her husband. In one episode, we also see that Eri knows martial arts, most likely learned from Kogoro, for self-defense. Although she is separated from Kogoro, she still cares deeply for him.

7. Heiji Hattori (Harley Hartwell in the English Version)

Detective Conan_Heiji (Copy)

Heiji Hattori is a high school student from Osaka, known as the "Detective of the West," making him Shinichi Kudo’s rival, who’s the "Detective of the East." Heiji and Shinichi first crossed paths during a murder case involving a mystery club. It was then that Heiji figured out that Conan was actually Shinichi, shrunken down.

Now, Heiji and Shinichi have become close friends, almost like brothers whenever they work together on a case. Heiji’s darker skin is a trait passed down from his grandfather. He’s also in a relationship with Kazuha Toyama, his childhood friend.

8. Kazuha Toyama (Kristen Thomas in the English Version)

Detective Conan_Kazuha (Copy)

Kazuha Toyama is Heiji Hattori’s childhood friend and his first crush since they were 10. Even though she can be a bit feisty, Kazuha really cares about Heiji. She’s also very superstitious and even gave Heiji a lucky charm to protect him, knowing he often puts himself in danger while solving cases.

Her father, Ginshiro Toyama, is the Chief Criminal Investigator of the Osaka police district and is close friends with Heiji’s dad, Heizo Hattori. Although Kazuha is gentle and tends to cry easily, she’s one of the strongest female characters in the series. Like Ran, who is a karate expert, Kazuha excels in kendo.

9. Makoto Kyogoku

Makoto Kyogoku is an 18-year-old high school student and a top karate athlete. He’s actually one of Ran’s role models. He first saw Sonoko while attending a match, where he noticed her cheering for Ran. This moment made Makoto fall for Sonoko at first sight.

In Volume 22 of Detective Conan, while on summer vacation, Makoto helped protect Sonoko from assassins targeting her. After that, Sonoko was no longer single! Though she adores Makoto, she sometimes makes him jealous because of her admiration for Kaito Kid.

10. Professor Hiroshi Agasa

Detective Conan_Prof. Agasa (Copy)

Professor Agasa is a close friend of Shinichi’s family and lives right next door to their house. He’s a brilliant scientist, though some of his inventions are pretty useless and often become the butt of jokes between him and Shinichi.

But despite the occasional silly inventions, Professor Agasa has also created some amazing gadgets that have helped Shinichi in his disguise as Conan.

These include the voice-changing bow tie, the stun-shooting watch, super strong suspenders, detective badges, tracking glasses, power-enhancing shoes, and a belt that inflates a soccer ball, among others. Prof. Agasa is also one of the few people who knows Conan’s true identity.

11. Ai Haibara (Anita Halley in the English Version)

Detective Conan_Ai Haibara (Copy)

Ai Haibara used to be a member of the Black Organization, the same group that gave Shinichi the poison that shrunk him. Going against the organization, she intentionally took the same poison herself, shrinking her body too. After escaping, she collapsed in front of Prof. Agasa’s house, who immediately helped her.

Prof. Agasa took her in and gave her a new identity, changing her name from Shiho Miyano to Ai Haibara. Her sister, Akemi Miyano, was killed by the organization, which pushed Ai to leave the group. Now, she sides with Conan and lives as a 5th-grade student, hiding from the organization.

12. Ayumi Yoshida (Amy Yeager in the English Version)

Detective Conan_Ayumi (Copy)

Ayumi is one of Conan’s close friends at Teitan Elementary School. At just 7 years old, she’s a sweet and humble little girl who loves cooking, playing soccer, and hanging out with her friends. She also has a favorite hero, Captain Yaiba. Even though she’s still young, Ayumi’s innocent actions sometimes end up helping Conan with his investigations.

She lives with her parents in an apartment in Beika City and is good friends with Ai Haibara, Genta Kojima, and Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya. Ayumi first appeared in the Detective Conan series while investigating a haunted castle in the very first volume of the comics.

13. Genta Kojima (George Kojima in the English Version)

Detective Conan_Genta (Copy)

Genta is one of Conan's good friends and a member of the Little Detective Club, which he actually founded. He’s big for his age and has a huge appetite, with grilled eel rice being his favorite food.

He’s known for being brave but can also be a bit naughty. One time, he got in trouble with Ai for playing ball indoors and accidentally knocked the ball into a pot of curry that Ai and Ayumi had just made for lunch.

Like Conan, Ai, Ayumi, and Mitsuhiko, Genta is a 5th grader at Teitan Elementary School. He and Mitsuhiko love teasing Conan, especially when they catch him being fussed over by Ran. But Genta gets most excited when the word "treasure" is mentioned, as he’s always eager to go treasure hunting with the group.

14. Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya (Mitch Tennison in the English Version)

Detective Conan_Mitsuhiko (Copy)

Mitsuhiko is one of the smartest kids in his class, second only to Conan. Even at just 7 years old, he knows a lot more than most kids his age, especially when it comes to science and technology. He often lends a hand in Conan’s investigations because of his sharp mind.

Like Genta, Mitsuhiko also has a crush on both Ai and Ayumi. When the Little Detective group comes together, Mitsuhiko, along with his friends, contributes more than just goofing around—they actually help with the investigations. Sometimes, their childlike innocence helps Ai and Conan pass off clues to the police without raising suspicion.

15. Yusaku Kudo (Booker Kudo in the English Version)

Detective Conan_Yusaku (Copy)

Yusaku Kudo is Shinichi’s father and a well-known novelist both in Japan and America, especially after his hit novel Night Baron. Much like Shinichi, Yusaku is famous for his sharp analytical skills, which have helped the police solve several cases.

During his rise to fame, he met Yukiko Fujimine, a famous Japanese actress. The two eventually fell in love and got married. Both Yusaku and Yukiko are aware of Shinichi’s transformation into Conan and help him keep his identity a secret.

16. Yukiko Kudo (Vivian Kudo in the English Version)

Detective Conan_Yukiko (Copy)

Before she married Yusaku Kudo, Yukiko was a famous actress known as Yukiko Fujimine. She decided to retire from acting after getting married. The two met when Yukiko played a role in a movie based on one of Yusaku’s novels.

Yukiko’s youthful appearance often gets her compliments, and she hates being called old. She adores her son, Shinichi, and is always protective of him.

Yukiko is also best friends with Eri Kisaki, Ran’s mother. They became close when their children attended the same school. But interestingly, Yukiko isn’t close with Tomoko, Sonoko’s mom, even though their daughters are friends.

17. Inspector Megure (Joseph Meguire in the English Version)

Detective Conan_Inspektur Megure (Copy)

Inspector Juzo Megure is the head of the homicide crime division. He works closely with two subordinates, Miwako Sato and Wataru Takagi. Inspector Megure is always seen wearing a hat, which he uses to cover a scar he got when he first met his wife, Midori.

Inspector Megure is known for being a kind and wise leader. He often works alongside Inspector Shiratori and, together with Miwako and Takagi, they solve many cases. Somehow, these cases always seem to involve Kogoro Mouri, Conan, and their group.

18. Miwako Sato (Saimone in the English Version)

Detective Conan_Miwako (Copy)

Miwako Sato is the only female detective in her division, making her very popular among her colleagues. Many of her fellow detectives admire her and some even want to date her. However, Miwako already has a romantic connection with her colleague, Detective Takagi.

Miwako is brave, skilled, and quick when it comes to catching criminals. She’s also trained in martial arts. Her dedication to justice runs deep, especially since her father, who was also a policeman, died while chasing down a criminal. This personal connection to law enforcement is what drives her to be the police officer she is today.

19. Wataru Takagi (Harry Wilder in the English Version)

Detective Conan_Takagi (Copy)

Detective Wataru Takagi works closely with Miwako Sato and serves as Inspector Megure’s assistant. His friendly and approachable personality makes him popular with many, including Kogoro Mouri, Conan, and the Little Detectives. Though he can be a bit clumsy at times, he’s a highly reliable member of the police force.

Takagi has long had feelings for Miwako Sato, and after some time, he finally started dating her, despite earning some jealous glares from other male officers in their division.

Their relationship is quite special, and the two were even featured in the Detective Conan movie titled Love Story at Police Headquarters - Wedding Eve.

20. Gin

Detective Conan_Gin (Copy)

Gin is a top member of the Black Organization and the one responsible for giving Shinichi the poison, APTX-4869. He’s a ruthless and sinister figure, always dressed in black from head to toe, with silver hair that adds to his mysterious appearance.

His mission is to track down Shiho Miyano (now Ai Haibara) because she betrayed the organization. He’s often seen with his partner, Vodka, driving around in a vintage Porsche 356A, a signature element of their presence.

21. Vodka (Kaspar in the English Version)

Detective Conan_Vodka (Copy)

Vodka is Gin’s assistant and right-hand person in the Black Organization. Like Gin, Vodka is always dressed in black, and she never takes off her hat or sunglasses, adding to her mysterious vibe.

Vodka and Gin are two of Shinichi’s main targets as he seeks to expose the crimes of the Black Organization. Interestingly, all of the organization members are named after alcoholic drinks, including Gin, Vodka, Bourbon, Vermouth, and others.

22. Kaito Kid (Phantom Thief Kid in the English Version)

Detective Conan_Kaito Kid (Copy)

Kaito Kid, whose real name is Kaito Kuroba, is a high school genius and a master thief. He loves causing chaos for the Japanese police, but he also has a cool, charming personality that makes him a favorite among fans. His appearance is very similar to Shinichi Kudo, and he sometimes impersonates Shinichi to help Conan.

While Conan often finds Kaito’s antics frustrating, especially since Kaito likes to steal valuable items (often from the Suzuki family’s collection), Sonoko is a big fan of Kaito Kid, much to her boyfriend Makoto’s annoyance.

So there you have it, some of the key and supporting characters in the Detective Conan series. Of course, there are plenty more characters, but it would take more than one article to cover them all! Hopefully, this has given you a good starting point to enjoy the comics, series, or movies if you’re a Detective Conan fan!
