10 Fun Facts about the Genius Detective Conan

Detective Conan is a popular Japanese manga series created by the well-known mangaka Aoyama Gosho. It first appeared in the Weekly Shōnen Sunday magazine back in 1994, and it didn’t take long for the series to gain huge popularity.

The production company, TMS Entertainment, went on to create movies and animated dramas based on the series. It was even released outside Japan under the title Case Closed.

The story is about Shinichi Kudo, a brilliant 17-year-old detective. Despite his young age, Shinichi’s sharp mind is far beyond that of most teenagers, and he often helps the police crack difficult cases. His skills have earned him quite a reputation, making him a person of interest to many.

One day, while on a date with his childhood friend, Ran Mouri, at Tropical Land, Shinichi noticed something suspicious. Leaving Ran behind, he decided to investigate, but things took a dark turn when he was attacked by a mysterious man.

The man, known as Gin, is part of a dangerous group called the Black Organization. He gave Shinichi a drug called Apotoxin 4869, a deadly poison meant to kill him. However, instead of dying, Shinichi's body shrank.

After the drug shrank his body, Shinichi escaped and went to his family friend, Professor Agasa. When Ran came looking for him, Shinichi panicked and took on the identity of Conan Edogawa, a first-grade student, claiming to be a distant relative of Shinichi.

Conan moved in with Ran, hoping to gather information about the Black Organization, which might come through her father, Detective Kogoro Mouri. So began his new life as a 7-year-old. During this time, Conan met another girl, Ai Haibara.

Ai Haibara was a former member of the Black Organization, once known as Shiho Miyano, or Sherry. She knew about Shinichi's transformation into Conan because she, too, had taken the Apotoxin 4869 and shrank to a younger form. She eventually sought refuge at Professor Agasa’s house after escaping from the organization.

Shinichi Kudo is the only child of Yusaku Kudo, a famous novelist, and Yukiko Kudo, a well-known former actress. He earned a reputation as Japan's top young detective because of his incredible skill in solving tough police cases with sharp and accurate analysis.

His curiosity eventually got him involved in a dangerous criminal group known as the Black Organization. This led to the 17-year-old Shinichi being poisoned with a mysterious drug called APTX-4869, which shrank him into the body of a 7-year-old. To keep his true identity hidden, Shinichi took on the name Conan Edogawa.

2. Conan Edogawa's Identity

Conan Edogawa is the fake identity Shinichi created on the spot when Ran showed up at Professor Agasa's house looking for him. Nervous and hiding, Shinichi came up with the name by glancing at the bookshelf nearby.

The name "Conan" comes from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the British author who created Sherlock Holmes, and "Edogawa" comes from the Japanese mystery writer Edogawa Ranpo. And just like that, Shinichi began his new life as Conan Edogawa.

3. Shinichi Kudo & Conan Edogawa’s Family

Shinichi’s parents, Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo, are rarely home, leaving Shinichi to manage on his own. But he never feels lonely, thanks to his love of reading and his passion for helping the police solve cases.

As for Conan Edogawa, he was supposedly given a mother named Fumiyo Edogawa, who appeared out of nowhere in Volume 5 of the Detective Conan manga.

Fumiyo’s sudden appearance shocked Shinichi since Conan’s identity was supposed to be made-up. It turns out Fumiyo was actually Yukiko in disguise, wanting to surprise her son.

4. Shinichi Kudo's Lover

As most people know, Shinichi Kudo's love interest is Ran Mouri, his childhood friend. Ran is 17 years old and goes to Teitan High School, just like Shinichi.

They've been close since elementary school, and their bond grew over the years. Shinichi often felt a bit intimidated by Ran because she's skilled in karate.

Not only is she great at karate, but she's also the captain of Teitan High's karate club and has won several championships, even at the national level.

Shinichi cares deeply for Ran, and the feeling is mutual. Ran was heartbroken when Shinichi disappeared, not knowing that he had become Conan.

5. Shinichi Kudo's Residence

Shinichi Kudo lives in Beika City, District 2 - Block 21. This address is revealed in an invitation sent to him by the bomber Teiji Moriya in the first Detective Conan movie, The Time-Bombed Skyscraper, which was released in 1997. However, Beika City doesn’t actually exist—it’s a fictional city.

The name Beika is a nod to Baker Street, the famous home of Sherlock Holmes. In the series, Beika City is located near Tokyo Bay, about 4 kilometers southeast of Shinjuku. Most of the events in Detective Conan take place in this city.

After becoming Conan, he had no choice but to attend Teitan Elementary School and make friends with kids his age. At first, some of them didn’t like Conan, but eventually, they became his close friends. His new friends include Ayumi Yoshida, the sweetest girl in the group, Genta Kojima, and Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya.

The five of them formed a group called the Little Detectives, with Genta as the leader because of his big, brave personality. Conan is often seen as the nerdy one, but despite their playful nature, the group sometimes stumbles upon important clues through their innocent adventures.

7. Characters Who Like Conan

When Shinichi became Conan Edogawa, a few characters developed feelings for him in his child form. The first is Ayumi Yoshida, his classmate at Teitan Elementary School. Conan, Ayumi, and their friends Ai, Genta, and Mitsuhiko often hang out together. Over time, Ayumi started to fall for Conan because they spent so much time together.

Besides Ayumi, there are hints that Ai might also have feelings for Conan. From the moment they met, Ai showed signs of interest. In Volume 18, Ai even mentioned that she and Conan are compatible. But the real question is, does Ai like Conan, or is she attracted to Shinichi, who’s trapped in Conan's body?

8. Ai's Reason for Shrinking

As mentioned earlier, Ai Haibara is a fake identity created with Professor Agasa's help. Her real name is Shiho Miyano, a scientist working for the Black Organization. Her job was to continue the research on a drug called the Silver Bullet, a project started by her parents.

Tragically, both her parents died in what the organization claimed was an accident, and her older sister Akemi was also killed by the Black Organization.

When Ai, known within the organization by the code name Sherry, discovered that her sister had been murdered, she rebelled. In an attempt to escape, she took APTX-4869, which shrank her into her child form.

Shinichi, or Conan, has a few things he's really passionate about. He loves mystery novels by famous writers like Agatha Christie, Conan Doyle, and others. He also enjoys playing the violin, but funnily enough, he can't sing—he's tone-deaf and often teased by his friends for it.

One of his favorite foods is lemon pie, which we learn from Volume 18 of the manga. Ran once made lemon pie for Shinichi because she knew how much he liked it. Besides that, Shinichi loves soccer, one of his favorite sports, along with karate (which Ran taught him) and judo (which he learned from Kogoro).

10. Shinichi Kudo's Skills

On top of that, he’s great at throwing darts with perfect aim. And if that wasn’t enough, Shinichi can even drive a car—and fly a plane!

If Shinichi were a real person, Ran would have her hands full dealing with all the competition. Handsome, smart, rich, and multi-talented—what more could you want? Plus, his sharp mind can pick up on the smallest clues to solve even the toughest cases.
