10 Members of the Black Organization in Detective Conan

If you're a fan of Detective Conan, you're probably familiar with the Black Organization. This group is at the heart of why Shinichi Kudo was shrunk into a child, setting him on a quest for justice as he tries to take them down.

The Black Organization is often associated with two key members: Gin and Vodka. These two are involved in almost every case connected to the group. But the organization has way more members than just these two. Want to know who they are? 

The Black Organization is one of Japan's biggest mafia groups, known for carrying out ruthless and well-organized crimes like theft, kidnapping, and money laundering. They keep a low profile, making them seem even more exclusive and secretive.

In the Detective Conan series, the Black Organization is responsible for turning Shinichi’s life upside down. They developed the drug that caused Shinichi’s body to shrink from a 17-year-old high schooler into a 7-year-old child.

To hide their illegal activities, the Black Organization operates under the name of a large company, the Karasuma Group. This way, their criminal operations fly under the radar. The Karasuma Group is well-known, even by the wealthy Suzuki family, since both are powerful corporations.

While not much is known about who truly owns the Karasuma Group or who leads the Black Organization, Shinichi (now Conan) has been trying to uncover the truth. The only name he’s found so far is Renya Karasuma, the head of the Black Organization, but details beyond that remain a mystery.

Aside from Renya, there are other key members he trusts to run the organization and keep its secrets safe. Some of these members even know Conan Edogawa and Ai Haibara’s true identities! Curious who they are? Let’s find out!

1. Renya Karasuma

Renya Karasuma is the leader of this shadowy organization. He was notorious for being ruthless, greedy, and unwilling to lose. As a powerful figure in the elite class, he used his influence to get whatever he desired, whether it was rare antiques or even someone's life.

Renya's fortune is immense, with his Karasuma company being the most powerful in Japan, followed by the Suzuki Group, owned by Sonoko's family. He funds illegal operations, often leaving his trusted subordinate, Gin, to handle the dirty work.

2. Gin

Gin is Renya’s right-hand man, holding the second-highest position in the organization. He’s known for being both brutal and meticulous, carrying out assassinations with precision. His intelligence makes him a role model for Vodka, his loyal partner who is always by his side.

Physically, Gin is quite intimidating, usually seen wearing a black high-collared coat, with long silver hair and a cold, piercing gaze. He’s also the one responsible for shrinking Shinichi's body by injecting him with an experimental drug developed by the organization.

3. Vermouth

Vermouth, also known as the "Silver Bullet," is one of the organization’s top executives. She’s a favorite of the boss and also works as a professional actress, living two lives as both Sharon Vineyard and her "daughter" Chris Vineyard, who has a connection to Shinichi’s mother, Yukiko Kudo.

Vermouth is a master of disguise, fooling her enemies multiple times by posing as various well-known characters from the Detective Conan series. Interestingly, while Vermouth knows Conan’s true identity, she chooses to keep it a secret, and their relationship remains surprisingly complex, rather than hostile.

4. Rum

Rum is known as the second-in-command of the organization. His authority is so strong that even someone like Gin can't refuse his orders. Rum is described as a middle-aged man with a fake eye on the left side, caused by an accident in the past. He’s also a very secretive person.

Because of this, Rum’s true identity remains unclear, even within the organization. He has also created fake identities, making it hard for others to figure out who he really is.

While he might not seem as terrifying as Gin or Vodka in the Detective Conan series, if Rum ever discovers Conan’s true identity, it would be game over.

5. Vodka

The organization gave this large man the code name Vodka. He’s always by Gin’s side, following him wherever he goes. With his mafia-like appearance and cold demeanor, Vodka is just as ruthless as Gin when it comes to killing.

However, Vodka is a bit easier to outsmart than Gin. Conan has managed to tap into Vodka’s conversations to gather information about the organization several times. Vodka is also the first member of the Black Organization to appear and speak in the Detective Conan series. He looks up to Gin as his role model at work.

6. Chianti

Among female members of the organization, aside from Vermouth and Kir, Chianti is one of the most respected. She’s easily recognized by her butterfly wing tattoo near her left eye and is a skilled sniper, admired and relied upon by the organization. Chianti usually works alongside Korn, as they are both expert snipers.

Chianti has never missed her mark while working in the assassination division, and her favorite weapon is the PSG-1 semi-automatic sniper rifle. She had a close relationship with another member, Calvados, who died protecting Vermouth. Chianti has held a deep hatred for Vermouth ever since.

7. Korn

Korn is part of the organization’s assassination team, working alongside Chianti. They’re the top snipers in the Black Organization. Korn’s biggest flaw is his lack of patience, and he gets extremely frustrated if he doesn’t get a chance to kill.

Korn is like a robot—he doesn’t socialize with other members and is always seen as mysterious. In the Detective Conan series, he rarely speaks and mostly just follows Gin's orders. Despite his age, Korn’s skill in killing is unmatched.

8. Kir

Kir, also known as Rena Mizunashi, is a news anchor, but her real name is Hidemi Hondō, a CIA agent infiltrating the Black Organization to investigate their illegal activities.

In volume 57 of the manga, Kir (or Rena) falls into a coma after an incident. The organization closely watches her, fearing she might reveal secrets. However, Kir manages to play her part well, keeping her true mission hidden.

9. Bourbon

Bourbon’s real name is Rei Furuya, and he works for the National Police Agency’s Security Planning Division. Like Kir, Bourbon infiltrates the Black Organization to gather information. He often gets special attention from Vermouth.

In addition to being known as Bourbon and Rei Furuya, he also goes by Tōru Amuro. In this role, he works at a café in the same building as Kogoro Mouri’s office, where he keeps an eye on Kogoro to gather information on important cases.

10. Calvados

Calvados was a key member of the Black Organization, working with Vermouth to try to kill FBI agent Jodie Starling. However, during the mission, things went wrong, and Calvados died while protecting Vermouth.

Chianti, who was close to Calvados, blames Vermouth for his death, which caused tension between them. In the Detective Conan series, Calvados is rarely shown clearly, mostly appearing as a black silhouette in a few chapters.

While there are other members of the Black Organization who have passed away, like the Miyano family, the ten members listed above are the most important or executive-level figures in the Detective Conan series.
