9 People Who Know Ai Haibara's True Identity
The Detective Conan series features many important characters who bring excitement to each episode or chapter, and one of them is the mysterious Ai Haibara. If you're familiar with the Detective Conan story, you likely know her real identity. Like Conan, Ai shares a similar fate.

Not everyone knows who Ai Haibara really is; only a handful of people do. One of them is Conan, or Shinichi Kudo. He chose to keep Ai’s secret to protect her, as she is being hunted by dangerous enemies. But who exactly is Ai?
Shiho Miyano
If you're new to Detective Conan, the name Shiho Miyano might not ring a bell. Let me explain! Shiho was a member of the Black Organization, working as a scientist on some of their most advanced projects.
Her connection to the organization runs deep, as both of her parents were involved, too. She also had a sister, Akemi Miyano, who was part of the group but tragically lost her life, with Shiho suspecting the organization had something to do with her death.
Shiho eventually refused to continue working on a drug project, code-named Apotoxin 4869, which the organization planned to use as a weapon. In retaliation, they imprisoned her.
To escape, Shiho made a bold decision—she took the drug herself. Knowing it was still in development and aware that it had caused Shinichi to shrink, Shiho transformed into a child and fled.
Her decision was risky, but she needed help. To protect herself and Shinichi, she faked the deaths of those the organization was after, keeping them off their trail.
Characters Who Know Shiho Miyano/Ai Haibara's True Identity
After transforming into a child, Shiho ended up outside Professor Agasa's house, which was next door to Shinichi’s place. The professor found her, and after hearing her story, he decided to help.
Shiho then met Shinichi, and although he was initially angry because she had been part of the Black Organization, he eventually softened. After learning what she’d been through, Shinichi agreed to work with her to take down the organization. With Professor Agasa's help, Shiho adopted a new identity as a child—Ai Haibara.
Several people know Ai Haibara's true identity. While some protect her secret, others see her as a target because of her ties to the organization. Here’s a list of the characters who are aware of who Ai really is:
1. Shinichi Kudo/Conan Edogawa
Shinichi, as Conan Edogawa, first met Ai in Volume 18 of the manga. She appeared as a new student at Teitan Elementary School and sat next to Conan in class. After they got involved in a kidnapping and money laundering case, Ai revealed her identity to Conan on the way home, leaving him shocked.
Professor Agasa, who already knew the truth, later convinced Conan that Ai was their key to infiltrating the organization. Ai agreed since she also held a grudge against them, and from then on, they became close. It’s even hinted that Ai has feelings for Shinichi!
2. Profesor Agasa
Professor Agasa was the first person to learn about Shiho Miyano, later known as Ai Haibara. Just like when he discovered what happened to Shinichi/Conan, Professor Agasa didn’t hesitate to help. He found Shiho lying weak and drenched in the rain in front of his house.
After hearing her story, Professor Agasa took Shiho in and helped her create a new identity as Ai Haibara. He sent her to school with Shinichi, where she quickly became friends with Genta Kojima, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Ayumi Yoshida, joining the Little Detective Club.
3. Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo
Shinichi’s parents, Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo, also know Ai Haibara’s true identity. Shinichi confided in them about everything. Even though they were aware of Ai’s situation, they never spoke of it to anyone, keeping her safe from the many enemies, especially the Black Organization.
In Volume 78 of the manga, Yukiko helps Shiho (also known as Sherry in the organization) when she’s targeted by the Black Organization during a ride on the Bell Tree Express, owned by the Sonoko family. Yukiko cleverly tricks the organization’s members and manages to save Ai in secret.
4. Vermouth
Vermouth also knows Ai Haibara’s true identity, but she has never revealed it to the Black Organization. It’s unclear exactly when Vermouth learned the truth, but it’s likely that she discovered it during one of the organization’s reunion events.
At that event, another member of the organization, code-named Pisco, uncovered Ai’s identity. Vermouth was aware of this and decided to investigate further. She even disguised herself as Dr. Araide, the health officer at Teitan Elementary School, to get closer to Ai.
5. Pisco
Pisco is a high-ranking member of the Black Organization and one of its major financial backers. In his everyday life, he runs a luxury car company. He’s been with the Black Organization for so long that he even knew Ai Haibara’s parents.
Pisco managed to uncover Ai’s true identity because he recognized her face—he had known her since she was a child in the organization. When he matched the details, he realized Ai was actually Shiho Miyano. However, before he could report this to the organization, he was killed by Gin due to his carelessness.
6. Heiji Hattori
Heiji Hattori also knows Ai’s true identity, as Shinichi told him everything about her past as Shiho Miyano, a former scientist for the Black Organization. In addition to learning about Ai, Heiji was informed about the organization’s members and the reasons why Conan and Ai were being hunted.
Heiji even knows about the Apotoxin drug that caused all these problems. Despite this, Ai and Heiji don’t interact much, as they aren’t very close. Heiji also chooses not to get too involved in Ai’s efforts to protect her identity.
7. Shuichi Akai/Subaru Okiya
Shuichi Akai, who later disguises himself as Subaru Okiya, discovered Ai Haibara’s true identity as Shiho Miyano through his investigation into the Black Organization. With the help of his fellow FBI agents, Shuichi traced Ai’s movements and found them strikingly similar to Shiho’s, confirming his suspicions.
Although Shuichi doesn’t interact with Ai much, even while disguised as Subaru Okiya and living near the Little Detectives, he still keeps a watchful eye on her. At one point, Shuichi witnessed a confrontation between Ai and Vermouth, which further solidified his understanding of Ai’s identity.
8. Calvados
Calvados was a skilled sniper and a trusted member of the Black Organization. In one case, he teamed up with Vermouth to target and kill an FBI agent. However, things took a turn, and Calvados ended up committing suicide to protect Vermouth.
Before he died, Calvados overheard Vermouth calling Ai by her Black Organization code name, Sherry—Shiho Miyano’s name in the organization. Luckily for Ai, Calvados died before he could reveal this information, which could have put her and those around her in serious danger.
9. Rumi Wakasa
Rumi Wakasa’s background is still shrouded in mystery. She is introduced as a new teacher at Teitan Elementary School, hired due to the large number of new students enrolling. Throughout the series, she seems very interested in getting closer to the Little Detective Club—not because she’s curious about their activities, but because of Ai and Conan.
It’s hinted that Rumi knows Ai’s true identity. In Volume 99, during a reunion of former Teitan Elementary students, someone recognized Ai as Shiho Miyano because Shiho’s older sister, Akemi, had attended the same school. This realization left Rumi shocked, and she immediately began investigating Ai’s identity.
In addition to these 9 characters, there are others who suspect that Ai is not who she appears to be, but without solid evidence, they haven’t pursued their suspicions further.
