10 People Who Know Conan Edogawa's True Identity
Conan Edogawa is a character from the popular anime series "Detective Conan." The series has been a big hit, with over 100 comic volumes released in Indonesia and a 26th movie, "Detective Conan: The Iron Submarine," set to premiere in April 2023.
In the story, Conan is not a real boy but actually Shinichi Kudo, a 17-year-old high school student known as a Young Detective in Japan. Shinichi was transformed into a child after witnessing an illegal deal by the sinister Black Organization and being poisoned by them.
The attempt to kill Shinichi with the APTX-4869 poison failed. Instead of dying, Shinichi's body reverted to that of a 7-year-old due to the poison damaging his tissues. Under the alias of Conan, he seeks to solve the mystery of the Black Organization and return to his original body.
Before we dive into who knows about Conan's real identity, let’s look at the dangerous drug that caused Shinichi to transform. The drug, known as Apotoxin or APTX, was developed by the Black Organization to eliminate anyone interfering with their plans.
Once ingested, Apotoxin halts all cell activity and destroys them—a process known as apoptosis, leading to the victim's death. Fortunately for Shinichi, the version he consumed was still experimental, damaging his cells enough to shrink his body but not kill him. Unlike others who weren't so lucky, Shinichi survived without revealing important details about the Black Organization.
1. Ai Haibara/Shiho Miyano
Shiho Miyano used to work for the Black Organization, a group her entire family was involved in, including her parents and sister. However, an event led Shiho to rebel against them. She escaped after taking the APTX-4869 drug, which shrunk her body just like it did to Shinichi.
Now going by the name Ai Haibara, she ended up discovering Shinichi's secret identity. Seeking help, she headed to Shinichi's home but fainted outside Professor Agasa's house next door. Fortunately, Professor Agasa found and helped her.
2. Profesor Agasa
Professor Agasa was the first to learn about Shinichi's transformation into Conan Edogawa. Right after being poisoned, Shinichi turned to Professor Agasa for help and shared his story. The professor has since been a constant support, helping Shinichi maintain his disguise.
Supporting Shinichi isn’t always easy for Professor Agasa. He has faced several challenges while helping Conan with his cases, but he remains a steadfast ally, almost like a brother to Shinichi.
3. Heiji Hattori
Heiji Hattori is a young detective from Osaka, known for his sharp analytical skills, much like Shinichi. Heiji learned Conan's real identity during a case that involved a mystery novelist.
Since then, Heiji and Shinichi have worked closely together on various cases, often appearing inseparable like twins. Heiji has repeatedly come to Shinichi's aid, especially when his identity was at risk of being exposed by Ran or others.
4. Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo
Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo, Shinichi's parents, are well aware of the troubles their son faces. They were advised to stay out of Shinichi’s dealings to avoid drawing danger upon themselves from the Black Organization.
Despite the risks, Yusaku and Yukiko have often aided Shinichi in times of need. They cover for him by telling people that Conan is a distant relative’s son whenever someone inquires about his presence with them. Yukiko nearly got caught in her lie by Ran.
5. Vermouth
Vermouth, a master of disguise from the Black Organization, discovered that Shinichi, whom the organization believed was dead, is still alive. Yet, Vermouth has kept silent about Shinichi's survival.
This secrecy stems partly from gratitude; Shinichi and Ran once saved Vermouth while undercover in New York. Moreover, Vermouth has connections with Yukiko Kudo and harbors plans that might require Shinichi’s assistance, keeping him alive for potential use in a mysterious project.
6. Akemi Miyano
Akemi Miyano, older sister to Shiho Miyano/Ai Haibara, was also involved with the Black Organization like her sister and parents. Akemi once betrayed the organization and was executed while Conan was present.
Although Conan tried to intervene, he was too late; Akemi died in his arms. With her last breath, Conan disclosed his true identity to her, a secret that perished with her. Shiho was heartbroken upon learning that Conan arrived just moments too late to save her sister.
7. Subaru Okiya/Shuichi Akai
Shuichi Akai, once a CIA agent, was believed to be dead after a dangerous case. Continuing under the guise of a deceased identity, he adopted the alias Subaru Okiya. Shinichi’s family, unaware of his true identity, invited Subaru to stay at their house after his own place burned down.
Subaru, while living as Shuichi Akai, discovered that Conan was actually Shinichi during a moment when he overheard Conan pretending to be Shinichi on the phone. Although Shuichi knows about Conan's real identity, Shinichi, on the other hand, remains unaware of Subaru's true background.
8. Mary Sera
Mary Sera works for the British Secret Intelligence Service, or MI6. Her path crossed with Vermouth's during a case, leading Vermouth to administer the same APTX-4869 poison to her that Shinichi received, causing her to suffer a similar fate.
During a case involving the famous tennis player Minerva Glass, the camera unexpectedly turned to Mary, who instantly recognized Conan as Shinichi, whom she had met a decade earlier. Mary has a daughter named Masumi Sera who also starts to suspect that Conan is more than he appears to be.
9. Kaito Kid/Kaito Kuroba
Kaito Kid, often seen as Shinichi's archenemy, is notorious for stirring up trouble that keeps the Japanese police on their toes. Despite their rivalry, Shinichi has a close bond with Kaito Kid and has never attempted to imprison him. In fact, Kaito Kid frequently aids Shinichi in tight spots.
It's believed that Kaito Kid knows Conan's true identity, although it's never explicitly revealed how he found out. It’s likely tied to a story Conan shared about his mother being involved in a robbery case handled by Kid’s father. Kaito Kid also occasionally proves to be a dependable detective.
10. Eisuke Hondou
Eisuke is convinced that his older sister is still alive, unaware that she is a CIA agent named Rena Mizunashi who became entangled in a case with Kogoro. As Eisuke investigates Kogoro to confirm Rena's identity, he stumbles upon another revelation.
He discovers that Conan Edogawa and Shinichi Kudo are the same person. This leads Eisuke to understand that whenever Conan is around, the case is likely to be solved, often with Kogoro appearing to be 'asleep.' Shinichi eventually confirms this to him.
These are 10 key characters who know Conan Edogawa's true identity. Most of them keep this secret, likely because they want to protect Shinichi and shield him from the significant dangers that could arise, especially from the Black Organization.
